Profiles of NC Holocaust Survivors

Steve Goldberg has shared Holocaust survivor Abe Piasek’s story over 180 times in a way that audience members find meaningful and memorable. The INDY, a local news magazine, published this piece about Steve’s efforts to keep Abe’s story alive.

Steve taught high school students about history for more than two decades at some of the top schools in the country, including The Potomac School (McLean, VA), Cary Academy (NC), and Newton South High School (MA).

Steve earned a BA and an MAT in Social Studies degree from Duke University and a law degree from Georgetown Law School. He is a member of the Maryland Bar, and was recently recognized in a Maryland Bar Journal profile of his work sharing Abe’s story.

Steve led summer service learning trips to Ethiopia (2006) and Kenya (2009) that broadened his world view and made him better able to relate to Abe Piasek, who grew up in rural Poland in the late 1920s and 1930s.

Born and raised in Newton, MA, Steve now considers his home to be Durham, NC, where he and his wife live with their son (a first year college student).

When not sharing Abe’s story, Steve enjoys shooting baskets (he has a remarkably accurate three point shot as long as nobody is guarding him) and swimming. When he was younger, he played ultimate frisbee. He still enjoys throwing the disc around on sunny days.

Steve and his family visited Germany in the summers of 2023 and 2025, and while there, Steve was able to research Abe’s story. He identified the house in the Displaced Persons Camp where Abe lived from 1945-47.
